Faculty Mentoring Guidebook

Mentoring is a powerful driver of faculty excellence and institutional vitality. At UIC, it is not ancillary to the faculty experience; it is integral. Whether fostering scholarly growth, supporting career advancement, or affirming identity, mentoring is foundational to faculty success. Effective mentoring supports faculty in navigating the full arc of their careers and plays a critical role in clarifying expectations for promotion and tenure, strengthening research and teaching practices, and encouraging leadership development. Just as importantly, mentoring fosters a sense of connection and belonging, particularly for new and early-career faculty, and helps cultivate a positive, inclusive departmental culture. Strong mentoring practices contribute to faculty retention and well-being by creating networks of support, reducing isolation, and encouraging alignment between individual goals and institutional priorities.
