Planning for the 2024 Democratic National Convention
The 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC) will be held in Chicago from August 19-22, with main events at the United Center and McCormick Place.
While there are no planned DNC-related events on campus, and UIC is not in the DNC’s security perimeter, we anticipate significant public transportation and traffic delays due to UIC’s proximity to the United Center and the downtown area.
Please visit the City of Chicago’s Emergency Management & Communications website for up-to-date information as well as transportation and traffic assistance.
For live traffic, street closures, and emergency updates for the DNC: To opt in, TEXT DNC to 2-2-6-7-8-7 or download the Chicago OEMC app. For more information, please click here.
For the latest campus guidance and information, please refer to the official campus announcement dated August 1, 2024.

Dr. Leo Chen, SITL Director
Dr. Liaohai Leo Chen is the Director of Surgical Innovation and Training Laboratory (SITL) and a Research Professor of Surgery at University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). He joined the Department of Surgery at UIC eight years ago from Utah State University, where he was a USTAR professor in chemistry. Before Utah State, he was a molecular biologist and Nano-Bio group leader at Argonne National Laboratory. Dr. Chen received his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Rochester in 1997, followed by postdoctoral training at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Trained in chemistry but has been working on a variety of cross-disciplinary projects, he accumulated broad yet extensive experience in molecular imaging and spectroscopy, biophysics, chemistry, biology, material science, and biomedical engineering. Dr Chen’s main research interests lie in the development of new technologies for imaging-guided therapy, theranostics and telesurgery. As the Director of SITL, his current research efforts include: 1) Developing smart imaging probes and new imaging modalities to delineate tumor margins and unveil nerves and vessels beneath the tissue surface during surgery, thereby reducing intraoperative complications and improve surgical outcomes; 2) Assessing/Quantifying tissue bio-status (perfusion, stress, redox, etc.) in real-time during surgery, thus providing feedback to smart instruments, surgical maneuvers, and digital pathology; 3) Developing next generation of a mobile operating room (OR) integrated with surgical robots and imaging modalities to enable telesurgery; and 4) Working towards soft tissue surgical navigation and surgical subtask automation using a Da Vinci research kit robot through both AI-assisted and fully AI approaches.

Conocimiento Activity
The process of Conocimiento was developed by cultural activists in the early 1970s. It is rooted in the influence and inspiration of Paulo Freire, a Brazilian educator and philosopher who believed that we can teach each other about one another through dialogue. It is a basic tool for developing group connections. Within this Conocimiento, we explored our identities and experiences as faculty committed to UIC. It is through this process that we discover ways that we can connect with and support each other throughout our careers.
Workshop A: Getting to Know UIC Students
This workshop will prepare you for understanding and getting to know UIC’s diverse student population and how to support their needs in and out of the classroom.
Workshop B: A Bite-Sized Approach to Inclusive Teaching
It’s not too late to incorporate inclusive teaching practices into your classroom! This workshop will prepare you for the first day of class and beyond as we share bite-sized inclusive teaching activities that you can add to your teaching toolbox. Not only will these 5 minute activities get students engaged and build community, but they will also foster students’ metacognition.
Workshop C: Promotion and Tenure at UIC
This workshop will prepare you for Promotion and Tenure (P&T) including the materials and resources faculty need for promotion and/or tenure related needs. Whether being a tenure system or non-tenure system faculty member, this workshop will provide several helpful resources to help faculty successfully navigate through the P&T process at UIC.
